get a grip

Whenever someone’s talking to me about gender differences, I ask them to estimate–in their own words–the difference between male and female grip strength.  Are the distributions about the same?  Are they different?  How different?

I stopped after the first paragraph (the one that I quoted), made some guesses, calculated a number, then read the rest and was pretty spot on.

So the line of thinking was:

You need grip strength to hang from trees.

You need grip strength in direct correlation with the mass you’re trying to keep on a tree.

Men are 2 meters tall, women are 1.5 meters.

Mass varies with the cube of distance, so women mass (1.5/2)^3 compared to men, or 42%

Then I read the rest of the post and I am embarrassingly proud of how close I got.
