nonternary:

If I called BDSM a religion, Judaism a political movement, and libertarianism a fetish, you’d probably assume I was trying to insult all three.

Isn’t that weird? Why should permuting the pieces of three tautologies yield three statements with uniformly negative implications? If you took one of them in isolation, I’d probably say “oh, it’s an insult because people view political movements much more negatively than religions…” but that doesn’t work with a cycle like this.

It’s kind of weird, but not really – by calling BDSM a religion, you are implying that people who practice BDSM are lying when they call it a fetish, and so they are insulted. By calling Judaism a political movement, you are implying that people are lying when they call it a religion, and so they are insulted. When you call Libertarianism a fetish, you are implying that politicians are lying, and so they have to act insulted to preserve kayfabe.
