Note: if you purge all the people who make obvious lies from your social life, you will not end up with complete honesty, you will be left with some unknown mixture of honesty and well-executed lying
is this worse than people making obvious lies in order to either hurt you, or to get you to hurt other people?
like I don’t get this
It’s not worse, no, but on the other hand not all lying happens for those purposes
My point wasn’t “don’t kick anyone out for lying” but “don’t automatically kick people out for lying,” because some lies are worse than others and because you’ll end up kicking out the most obvious and thus most easily neutralizable liars
I’ve had friends and acquaintances who were clearly just bullshitting me sometimes, and I’ve kept them around nonetheless because there are a lot of things that go into my assessments of others, and questions like “do they just act like they know shit they don’t sometimes to seem smart, or do they try to manipulate and/or hurt me?” are crucial to that calculus

Ayup. Bullshitting about the things you have accomplished in your life means that I won’t work with you because I cannot accurately assess your competence, Friend X Who Is Not On Tumblr, but it does not mean we have to stop going out for beer and mutual complaints.
