as someone with a bachelor’s degree in english, i am inexpressibly tired of people telling me to get highly specific jobs that often require highly specific degrees. “just go write for a magazine!” you need a journalism degree for that. “just teach!” you need a teaching certificate, and also fuck you. “just go work at a tutoring place!” tutoring children with learning disabilities, which make up the majority of the clientele at those places, requires not only a teaching certificate but a specialized master’s degree. “just go work at a library!” you need a master’s degree in library science to be a librarian. it is actually a highly skilled and extremely competitive field. you don’t just “go work at a library,” you train for years in the vain hope that you will get one of handful of available jobs. “just go work at a library.” the nerve. the unmitigated gall. “just go work at a library.” ugh.

THE PART ABOUT LIBRARIES IS ESPECIALLY TRUE AND YOU SHOULD SAY IT THANK YOU OP.

uh…no it doesn’t/ no it isn’t? i work at a tutoring place. You definitely don’t need a teaching degree or a specialized masters degree (a lot of people who tutor are in the process of becoming qualified teachers who then go and teach in schools) and definitely most students don’t have learning disabilities.

Obviously it may be different where you live what the legal requirements are, but i’m curious where they’re getting that most tutoring students have learning disabilities.

what interests me most is what DO you do with an English degree then if all those potential jobs are right out. isn’t it like the most common straw man ever that English majors can literally only write long-winded philosophical treatises on Shakespeare?

Estate management.

Not of somebody else’s estate, obviosly. Your own.

Degrees in the Liberal Arts are for the social elite that will go on to rule the country, or at least rule their own fortune. You get them so you won’t look like a rube at the soiree when all the other people are talking chaucer.
