seriously, fuck the false dichotomy between Science and The Arts. as if capital-S Science isn’t an art that requires creativity, perseverance, patience, and skilled observation. as if The Arts don’t require rigor, discipline, practice, and attention to detail. as if both aren’t cultural structures that stand on foundations of sexist, racist, capitalist hierarchy. as if they both can’t be used for purposes of enrichment and revolution. i am so fucking over this idea of presenting science and art as opposites, when they have so much more in common than people think.
UM!!!!!!! UM!!!! this is a beautiful post!!!! and I feel it with every part of my soul!
Sounds like you’re just grumpy you got a worthless degree
>saying capitalist like it’s a bad thing
No wonder you’re spewing nonsense
Actually there was no art and science before the solid foundation of capitalism was built, and if we overturn capitalism, both will disappear again. People will be dying in rock caves from lack of medicine and the rocks caves will have no cave paintings.
I’m sorry I don’t make the rules, that’s just how it is.
“as if capital-S Science isn’t an art that requires creativity, perseverance, patience, and skilled observation”
none of these are qualities which normally make people go “ah, yes, this thing is Art”. you need to be observant and patient and persevere to do … basically anything complicated, and creativity will generally also prove useful. like, you need to be observant and patient and persevere to clean your kitchen, and creativity will probably let you get it done faster and more efficiently – nobody thinks this makes cleaning your kitchen art.
“as if The Arts don’t require rigor, discipline, practice, and attention to detail” again, these skills are not Science Skills, they are good for basically everything.
“did you know, general skills that sound vaguely ~systematizing~ or ~creative~ are useful for things”
like, yes, there is some overlap between institutions of art and science. they’re prestigious institutions which get state and private-donor funding and are often college-associated. [i was going to snark about whether they overlap more than football or not, but i think they actually probably do so i didn’t do that.]
there is also some overlap between doing art and doing science, but this post has not made it clear that there is more overlap than there is between either of those and, say, manufacturing non-art furniture.
also, shieldfoss, cave paintings and the like may not be founded on sexism/racism/capitalism but phrases like “The Arts” and “cultural structures” clearly mean that this is more about the high art market than it is about the mural down the street or someone’s fursona, and i think you probably know this.
Let me snark in peace ;_;
