“THE [t]RUMP ADMINISTRATION is considering whether to grant a South Carolina request that would effectively allow faith-based foster care agencies in the state the ability to deny Jewish parents from fostering children in its network. The argument, from the state and from the agency, is that the federal Religious Freedom Restoration Act should not force a Protestant group to work with Jewish people if it violates a tenet of their faith.
“That discrimination would apply not just to Jewish parents, but also to parents who are Muslim, Catholic, Unitarian, atheist, agnostic or other some other non-Protestant Christian denomination.”
Like, obviously not. Not even if you are the most incredibly “get the government out of my life” anarcho-free-association “I Should Be Allowed To Refuse Service To The Blacks And The Gays Because Nobody Should Force Me Into Anything” asshole would you think they should be allowed to do this.
“Should an institution trusted with the caretaking of a child be allowed to neglect that child” is a first-against-the-wall kind of thing. We don’t even need to wait for the revolution there’s a handy wall right there in the building. They’ve stopped thinking of the children as their charges and started thinking of them as a service they provide and they can fuck off.
Enforcing religious-based discrimination while taking government money would be a violation of the separation of church and state, straight up promoting protestant interests over other religions. You want federal cash, you play by secular rules, end of discussion.
That too but like
The idea that you’d keep a child in a foster system because you didn’t like the faith of the prospective adopters fucks me all the way up. I don’t even care if they get government money, I don’t want them doing that on their own dime either.
