Your public buses have overhead compartments? We don’t have those in Canada. The polite thing to do here is usually to put your bag/etc. on your lap, as opposed to the seat next to you. Men seem far more willing to carry their bags on their laps than women are, possibly due to the continued upper-body exertion necessary to keep it in place. (However, being a reasonable human being, I have not seen fit to start a campaign over it. Probably just another difference in average biology.)

I was thinking trains – but it’s the same on busses, I’ll typically put my bag/coat on the seat next to me, unless space is tight in which case I pick it up.
